Working at Dome Padel

We are fitting out an eight court indoor padel centre in Stechford. This page sets out the roles we expect the venue to need, and how to put your name forward for one of them.

Read this first. Nothing on this page is a job advert, an offer of employment or a promise of work. We have not opened yet, so we cannot give firm start dates, hours or pay. What follows is our honest plan for the team, and it will change as the building does.

The Site

An old warehouse in east Birmingham

The venue is a former warehouse off Flaxley Parkway in Stechford. Eight indoor courts are going in under the existing roof, with a cafe, changing rooms and a couple of community rooms around them. There is a free car park at the front, and Stechford station is a short walk away.

Fit-out is under way. Courts and equipment are arriving on site, and the building work sets the pace for everything else, hiring included. That is why the timings on this page are vague. We would rather say so than invent dates.

The Work

What working here is likely to involve

Worth knowing before you put your name forward, because none of it suits everyone.

Evenings and weekends

Padel is busiest after work and at weekends, so that is where most of the hours will sit. There will be daytime work, but less of it, and school holidays are likely to be the other busy stretch.

Indoors, all year

The courts are under a roof, so the schedule does not stop for weather. Sessions will run through winter, in a converted warehouse rather than a warm office.

A small team covering a lot

Eight courts, a cafe and a reception desk is not a large operation. Most people here will end up doing more than the job title suggests, particularly in the first year.

Nothing to inherit

There are no rotas, handbooks or systems in place yet. Anyone who joins early will be helping to write them, which suits some people and not others.

Checks where they apply

Any role working with juniors needs an enhanced DBS check. Some need first aid or food hygiene certification. We will be clear about what a specific role requires before anyone starts.

Padel is new to most people here

Birmingham has very few courts, so a large share of visitors will be playing for the first time. Patience with beginners matters in every role, not only in coaching.

This is what we think an eight court venue needs. It is not a list of live vacancies with dates attached, and it will change as the fit-out progresses. Pay, hours and start dates are discussed with individual candidates rather than published here.

Head Coach

Running the coaching side of the club: building a programme from nothing, bringing in and managing other coaches, and setting the standard for what a session at Dome looks like.

  • Putting together a coaching programme covering beginners through to competitive players
  • Recruiting and managing the coaching team
  • Junior coaching, holiday camps and school sessions
  • Setting up the disabled padel provision
  • Keeping an eye on court usage and the numbers behind the coaching offer

What we look for

  • A senior padel or tennis coaching qualification
  • Experience running a coaching team or a programme of some size
  • Comfortable teaching people who have never held a racket
  • Enhanced DBS and a current first aid certificate, or willing to obtain both
  • Able to work without an existing structure to fall back on

On court most of the week. Padel is new to a lot of Birmingham, so a fair share of the job is teaching the basics to people who have never played, and keeping them interested enough to come back.

An entry route into coaching. You do not need a qualification to put your name forward, but you do need a racket sport background and to be good with people.

What we look for

  • Padel, tennis, squash or badminton background
  • Aged 16 or over
  • Available after school, in the evenings or at weekends
  • Willing to complete a DBS check
  • No coaching experience needed

  • Able to keep a full building running without losing the thread
  • Comfortable with booking systems and basic reporting
  • First aid qualified, or willing to qualify
  • Available across evenings, weekends and early starts

Cafe Team Member

Coffee, food and drinks for people coming off court. Padel is sociable and groups tend to stay for a while afterwards, so the cafe gets busy in bursts around court changeovers.

  • Setting up and clearing down for events and camps

  • Thorough and reliable
  • Able to work early mornings or late evenings
  • Cleaning or facilities experience is useful
  • Basic maintenance skills are a bonus

Questions

Before you send anything

Do I need a padel qualification?
Only for the qualified coaching roles. Front of house, cafe, cleaning and duty management do not need a padel background. If you want to coach and are not qualified yet, the trainee route is the one to put yourself forward for.
When would the work start?
We do not know yet. The venue has not opened and the fit-out sets the timings, so start dates follow the build rather than a calendar. We are not in a position to give anyone a date at the moment.
Can I put myself forward for more than one role?
Yes. Pick the closest one on the form and mention the others in the message box.
Is there evening or weekend only work?
Evenings and weekends are when padel is busiest, so that is where most of the hours are likely to sit. We will not know the shift patterns until we are closer to opening. Put your availability on the form and we will have it on record.
Where is the venue and how do I get there?
Unit H, Flaxley Parkway, Stechford, Birmingham B33 9AN. There is a free car park on site, and Stechford station and local bus routes are nearby. There are fuller directions on our Stechford location post.
